The Guest Speaker Badges

At the school guest speaker event, Diego and Ana helped Henry set up the welcome desk while George tested the microphone. The guest speaker, Dr Patel, smiled and asked for a quick check before the doors opened. “We’ve made badges for everyone,” Henry said, “but I want to be sure the count matches the plan.” Ana explained that the plan was simple: each of the 18 audience seats would have exactly 2 badges ready, one for a visitor and one for a helper. Diego added, “We also prepared 6 extra badges for last-minute arrivals.” George lined the badges into neat stacks and asked Henry to announce the total to the room, so the team could label the storage box correctly. Henry looked at the stacks and nodded, ready to say the number out loud.

Short Story – Easy

What you’re doing: reading a tiny story, spotting the maths clues, and turning them into one simple calculation at a time.

How to solve it:

  • Read once for the story, then read again looking only for numbers, quantities, and comparisons.
  • Underline “total”, “altogether”, “each”, “left”, “shared” — those words usually tell you the operation.
  • Write the facts as a mini list (e.g. “There are ___ items”, “Each costs ___”, “Total is ___”).
  • Do one clean calculation, then check your answer fits the story.
