Short Story – Level 1 – Easy

Crisps, Cookies, and Chaos – Three friends order snacks, but their receipts form a system of equations.

It was meant to be a quick stop at the school canteen, but it turned into a puzzle none of them expected. Amy, Ben, and Carla were grabbing snacks before the bus – they went for crisps and cookies.

When the receipts printed, they noticed something strange. Amy’s total was £7 for two bags of crisps and one cookie. Ben had paid £8 for one bag of crisps and two cookies. Carla, who’d picked up three bags of crisps and three cookies, looked at her slip and frowned.

“Mine says £15,” she said. “I thought it would be more than that!”

Ben grinned. “Looks like we’ve got ourselves a snack equation.”

Amy laughed. “We just need to figure out how much each item costs.”

They sat on the canteen steps, comparing totals and scratching numbers into a napkin. The bell rang, the bus honked, and just as they were about to give up, Carla’s eyes lit up. She’d cracked it – the price of a bag of crisps and a single cookie finally made sense.

Additional instructions for Short Story (Level 1, Easy)

Short Story – Easy

Goal: find the hidden question. In Easy puzzles it’s usually a single “how many?” or “how much?” tucked into the plot.

Quick method:

  • Circle any numbers and label them (money, time, distance, items).
  • Spot the relationship: add for “altogether”, subtract for “left/changed”, multiply for “each”, divide for “shared equally”.
  • Do the sum neatly, then say the answer as a sentence (it helps you notice mistakes).
