Simple method: tidy the expression in three passes.

  • Pass 1: expand brackets (use FOIL if it’s two brackets).
  • Pass 2: combine like terms (add/subtract coefficients).
  • Pass 3: rewrite in a neat order (e.g. x terms first, constants last).

Tip: if there’s a minus sign in front of a bracket, treat it as multiplying by −1.
